Moisture Festival is thrilled to be honored by one of our volunteers, Kevin Beder, with a planned gift from his estate.<br />
<br />
This is the festival's first bequest, intended to help the festival long into the future. Estate giving is simple - name us in your will or list us as a beneficiary on your insurance policy. <br />
<br />
In Kevin's words: "If I could have lived in an earlier time, I wish that it could have been during the heyday of vaudeville in New York, where my family is from since immigrating from Germany and Ireland respectively. My fondness of the Moisture Festival family has let me make this fine organization a beneficiary of my estate after I die. Please join me in helping to preserve this great local entertainment for future generations to enjoy."<br />
<br />
Thank you Kevin for your inspiring legacy gift to the Moisture Festival family!<br />

Year end giving is what brings festival to life. Now is the time we need funds to build the 2018 festival as we dive into the front-end costs of producing this unique event.</div>

Where else in the world today do you see
such a range of talent presented in such a friendly and fun atmosphere? Where else can a family enjoy an evening of
live entertainment for the cost of a blockbuster movie night? Stages such as ours provide many children’s

supported by volunteer labor and with carefully stewarded donations which have enabled us to operate in the black now for fourteen years.<o:p></o:p></div>

our auction provides necessary expenses for the following season. Our October 27th Auction was a

That same level gift would pay for new aerial mats and rigging. We borrow mats and rigging now from friends
and gyms. It’s time we own the safest
mats available for our stellar aerial artists.
$750 pays for lighting equipment rental for the entire season. $500 buys two West Coast performers’

we still need 150 comfortable chairs for the audience. $50 buys two new chairs!<o:p></o:p></div>

<i><span style="font-size: 9.0pt; line-height: 107%;">By Steve Wacker<o:p></o:p></span></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i><span style="font-size: 9.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For me, one of the best things about Moisture Festival coming around every spring is the laughter. There’s nothing quite like busting a gut at the many antics of so many gifted varieté performers, wiping away tears of laughter while trying to catch one’s breath, and seeing everyone around you in the same condition.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But there’s also the thrill of seeing aerial artistry performed with impeccable skill, and appreciating the physical gifts of such performers. Duo Madrona, the fixed trapeze duo of Ben Wendel and Rachel Nehmer, is one such awe-inspiring act. Duo Madrona has been a Moisture Festival favorite for more than 10 years, ever since their Festival debut in 2006. I recently spoke with Ben about how he and Rachel became trapeze artists and why the Festival is one of their favorite venues.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Although Rachel became interested in the performing arts as a teenager, her aspirations were oriented toward a career in musical theater. But the French Woods Performing Arts Camp she attended in upstate New York also had a circus program, where she learned about the flying trapeze, juggling, unicycles, and the like. As Ben said, “Rachel went to this camp to be a Broadway performer, but immediately became involved in the circus program. And she never looked back.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
First, however, there was college, where Rachel and Ben met as biology students. They were lab partners, and they planned to pursue careers in neurobiology. But Rachel received a trapeze as a gift from a former teacher – a gift from the sky, as Ben put it – and she said “I’m going to get back into this.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We were best friends, and Rachel asked me if I wanted to learn trapeze things. I took to it like a fish to water. She was doing solo work, and she was teaching me solo work, but we had a lot of chemistry, and we started to learn partnering. We were pretty much self-taught, learning things on the fly. And we just kept improving.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After college they moved to Seattle, where their pursuit of trapeze artistry turned into something more than just a pastime. They became involved with the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts (SANCA) and soon realized that perhaps their true calling was a life in the circus. Rachel started performing with Cathy Sutherland (see my previous blog post about Cathy) and the Aerialistas. Ben and Rachel decided to retire from science and almost before they knew it were debuting at the Festival. “And then all of a sudden we were at Moisture Festival! I barely remember how we got from point A to point B,” Ben told me.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Those early Festival performances in the 2005-06 timeframe were major opportunities for us, defining who we were as performers and helping us create our material. Each iteration at the Festival was kind of a step for us,” says Ben. “One thing that was helpful was hanging out and performing with people like Hacki Ginda and Tom Noddy – amazing performers. Although we were still scientists at that time, we immediately felt very comfortable with the world of varieté. We were performing night after night with fantastic support and amazing audiences. As performers, you must perform in front of real, live, applauding audiences to become better.” <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Tom Noddy also told Ben and Rachel about performing opportunities in Germany, which was news to them. They learned how to put together a tour and get their career on a roll. Since then, in addition to the US, they’ve performed in Germany as well as Austria, France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Ben and I also spoke about the special magic of Moisture Festival, about people uniting for a common cause – mirth and enjoyment – and what it’s like to create and feel that human buzz. But he noted that there’s also the reality of being an acrobat and dealing with injuries.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I remember we were so fired up for our Festival debut – we ramped up what we were doing and acquired new skills. It was also our debut for our peers outside of the Festival community. I was warming up a day or two before, and I sprained my ankle so bad that we had to cancel our first show because I couldn’t walk. After 3 or 4 days I was able to limp, and we did the rest of our performances while I was heavily taped up. We learned something important during our first Festival performances: Circus is synonymous with grit.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In addition to their appearances with Moisture Festival and their performances in Europe, Duo Madrona appears regularly with Teatro Zinzanni, which has recently moved from Seattle to Redmond. In fact, most of their performing career has been with Zinzanni.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I asked Ben about the challenges of physical performance. “I never think about can’t – it’s more about how do I get better? How do I maintain? I’ve never been a ‘I can’t do this’ type of person. Rachel and I are intent and focused on NOW – our art only exists when we do it. We’re very cognizant of our age and our body skills, but the real challenge is to keep your passion, your curiosity, your compulsion to perform.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Duo Madrona recently completed a stretch of 51 shows in 17 days, which is difficult for me to comprehend (let’s just say I’m a few years older than Ben and Rachel ;>). Ben advised that they weren’t trying to maintain that kind of pace, but he was also thoughtful about it. “As we get older we get smarter about maintaining our bodies. There’s the importance of sleep and diet. Also, we can rely on our stage presence and ability as performers more than our ability as athletes, although there is an athletic component to it.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Duo Madrona also teaches, but not on a regular basis because they do so much touring. In addition, Rachel is currently the aerial lead for the professional program at SANCA. “We also do lessons – private coaching – and workshops. There are a lot of studios and schools in Seattle, and we’ve sort of built community all around. We both enjoy teaching.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I enjoyed hearing about Duo Madrona’s somewhat serendipitous switch from neurobiology to the circus, but my conversation with Ben was fascinating on many levels. If you’re curious to learn more, check out the Duo Madrona page on Facebook or see them at Teatro Zinzanni. I’m really looking forward to seeing them perform at Moisture Festival 2018 – the 15th anniversary year. See you there! <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Last year I wrote a post about the good folks at Hale’s Ales, who operate the primary venue for all the silliness, sassiness, sauciness, and cheek that is the Moisture Festival we’ve all come to anticipate each spring. As the primary venue, Hale’s Palladium is pretty danged important – but hopefully most readers of this blog appreciate the fact that the legions of MF volunteers are just as important, and that the Festival couldn’t maintain the merriment without them. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This post is about a special group of volunteers, the Moisture Festival Hammerheads, whose motto is </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We work to make art work.” It’s a motto to be proud of, I think. The Hammerheads like to use their hands, and they enjoy working together.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Typically, when certain MF things need to be done, the Hammerheads get together and figure out a plan to achieve the tasks at hand. Such tasks might include building a stage, building props, securing beams for aerial rigging, creating dressing rooms, hanging sound baffles, upgrading the sound system, upgrading the lighting system, hanging curtains, creating a kitchen with all its appliances – there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes, as you might imagine. The Hammerheads are as flexible as they are talented – the tasks present themselves and they get to work.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUPCzqGJSpJDwFuHPq8BMkrRraJ4ERK2M7ufyicshTGQ_tPIP3zRbRElnZmVfqBs5pn0YrS89gnl2HFfS6XIonsDLOjmdyj1UKkaV5375wBv8uhi4UpBZ5DMJb_QJTty4HJtgzqhH5Jrrm/s1600/hammerheads.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUPCzqGJSpJDwFuHPq8BMkrRraJ4ERK2M7ufyicshTGQ_tPIP3zRbRElnZmVfqBs5pn0YrS89gnl2HFfS6XIonsDLOjmdyj1UKkaV5375wBv8uhi4UpBZ5DMJb_QJTty4HJtgzqhH5Jrrm/s320/hammerheads.jpg" width="320" /></a>In a recent phone conversation, Hammerhead Mike Bailey (no relation to Festival Artistic Director and co-founder Ron W. Bailey) related an interesting story that I thought was worth sharing.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It may not be obvious to MF attendees, but the brightly painted west-facing entry doors to the Palladium (see the following photo) were actually cutouts within much larger doors – as in 13 feet high larger. These larger doors exist so that semi-trucks can drive right into the warehouse – after all, Hales IS a working brewery.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This last winter the building was the victim of a hit-and-run, probably by a truck. “The façade of the Palladium was crunched,” as Mike put it. In addition to the damage, the wettest winter in Seattle history had also affected the doors. An assessment of the damage determined that the doors needed something between repair and replacement, in addition to a fair amount of tweaking and adjusting – because, as previously noted, these are big doors. Those of us who struggle to make sure the backyard screen door is hanging straight can appreciate that hanging doors of this size isn’t a simple task<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivXlsuK5YiDUc2MNr9tEea4TqrvDGqAlJ1Y8T6Jcp2PwyBVQ26HwLTKvWQHx75UfDDjvMguqz4zJ1ALzZCBkVihN9xzrmHd7v2V_VMcPe6FL6N4U3uxuUnvxXHmcLAUrmcO8MPiOceAapW/s1600/door+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="617" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivXlsuK5YiDUc2MNr9tEea4TqrvDGqAlJ1Y8T6Jcp2PwyBVQ26HwLTKvWQHx75UfDDjvMguqz4zJ1ALzZCBkVihN9xzrmHd7v2V_VMcPe6FL6N4U3uxuUnvxXHmcLAUrmcO8MPiOceAapW/s320/door+2.jpg" width="308" /></a>Opening night of the Festival was approaching, and the main venue was in need of some carpentry TLC. So who you gonna call? The Hammerheads, of course. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Hammerheads are always up for a challenge – they know how to get things done. They not only managed to fix the damaged façade, they also redesigned and repainted it to make the entryway fully functional again. And they completed the job a couple of weeks before opening night. The new façade is shown in the following photo.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Another improvement this year was a merchandise trailer – perhaps you noticed it. “The Festival is trying to think through the right way to do merchandise – it would be great to be able to generate a bit more of a revenue stream,” said Mike. Someone donated a small utility trailer to the Festival, which the Hammerheads transformed into a kind of caravan wagon, perfect for selling merchandise. Special thanks to Hammerhead Steve Clark for the use of his shop during the project. It made its debut at this year’s Festival, outside the new doors and facing the box office. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

Ron W. Bailey noted that there’s been a core group of Hammerhead volunteers involved since 2004, the Festival’s first year. “When a few of them show up together, stories are swapped, often over a few beers. Many of them come from careers that don’t involve construction at all, including men and women of many different ages and many walks of life. Notes from a conversation with the Moisture Festival’s Cathy Sutherland</h2>
<h2>
<span style="font-size: small;">By Steve Wacker</span></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’ve been attending Moisture Festival shows for a few years now, and I never really thought much about the combination of art forms: varietè, aerial performance, and burlesque. That is, I hadn’t thought about them until I had the opportunity to speak with the Festival’s diva deviante of dance and gymnastics, its coordinator of all things aerial – Ms. Cathy Sutherland, without whom the Festival wouldn’t be as multifaceted as it is.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

We all appreciate the shared-laughter aspect of Moisture Festival shows, but there’s definitely something to be said for how the giggles, gags, and jokes are complemented by aerial artistry. I know that I’ve been gob-smacked more than once when, while trying to catch my breath after laughing so hard that I thought I’d pass out, I saw an aerial performance that left me awestruck and speechless. This is the dimension that Sutherland brings, with her passion for physical movement and her appreciative eye for talent. She was the person who recognized the possibilities of burlesque, and the potential synergy and audience appeal of combining burlesque with aerial artistry and varietè.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sutherland has quite a resumé, with a strong emphasis on life experience. In her mid-20s she dropped her gymnastic scholarship at the University of Washington <i><u>and</u></i> turned down a dance scholarship to go to Europe and make her living as a performer/musician (saxophone and vocal harmonies) on the streets of Paris and elsewhere. She and MF cofounder Ron Bailey established the Royal Famille de Caniveaux, and their relationship evolved from the professional to the personal, which ultimately became a marriage partnership and family. Their daughter Caela is a gifted singer and entertainer in her own right – her first CD release is slated for the spring of this year.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
After they returned to the States, Sutherland says that originally the concept of MF was pretty much Bailey’s thing. “RB – I call him RB – was kind of wanting to do this. At first, it was something that he started, and I was really involved with my gymnastics team. He and I had done a lot of stuff together, been to Europe and done all that, playing in the streets, you know.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sutherland feels very fortunate for the opportunities she has had in gymnastics and dance, and the chance to work with some great dancers and choreographers, such as Pat Graney. But Sutherland is one of those people who can’t stand going to gyms for exercise, and when an invitation to join an aerialist troupe came along she jumped on it.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I had been invited by Lara Paxton of the Aerialistas to become an understudy in this new all-girl aerial gang. That sounded like fun, and I was looking for something to do. Before I knew it I was performing with them and having a blast. Then Moisture Festival started letting me do our aerial acts there. This was a six-person troupe, which was really nice to see. We would go to Lara’s house and make these great fairy costumes, with big fairy wings.” Sutherland speaks highly of Paxton’s creativity, and is grateful for the opportunity to work with her. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

“Then burlesque started happening, and there was a need to do burlesque. We even created a burlesque aerial number, which we did at Moisture Festival. We did our first burlesque there, at Hale’s Palladium, but we realized we needed to find our own venue, that the comedy/varietè needed to be on its own – so people who wanted family-oriented entertainment didn’t get it mixed up with burlesque. We tried different venues and performed at some really nice ones, such as ACT Theatre, and over time we started incorporating burlesque into aerial.” <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

Eventually they ended up finding the Broadway Performance Hall venue (MF’s primary burlesque venue today). “We really wanted to differentiate our burlesque from other burlesque in town – we wanted it to have a Moisture Festival feel, with skill acts and aerial acts and humor, like the original music hall idea. We wanted to see those other acts. And there’s so much humor in burlesque – like our aviatrix act, in which we were all formation flyers dressed up like Amelia Earhart, for example. We had a lot of fun incorporating burlesque into aerial.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sutherland is not very philosophical about Moisture Festival’s ability to foster a sense of community. “That’s not me. I think that RB is more the person who brings the community together – he’s the visionary about such things. I just like things physical. I like doing physical, fun, scary things. I like to laugh, and being up high – I’m so lucky. And we’re also lucky to be part of such a great community, with organizations such as SANCA (the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts) and Emerald City Trapeze, and Teatro Zinzanni bringing great aerial acts in from places like France and Canada.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

Sutherland believes that MF audiences appreciate the fact that the Festival is genuine, that it’s not a hustle. “There’s a feeling that the audience is proud of us. Like when we were doing the aviatrix act, there were women in the audience who appreciated that we were older women – in our forties and fifties – doing a very cool act, and they were totally behind us. That’s something that’s engendered in that room, and to me a lot of that spirit is something that RB creates.”<o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sutherland’s positive spirit shines throughout her work, and it shone throughout our conversation. She shared some fascinating details of the Festival’s history, and I know that this spring I’m going to have a deeper appreciation for the aerialist and burlesque performers. See you there!<o:p></o:p></div>

Stress relief, distraction, reduction of anxiety and pain and empowerment of patients are just a few of the measurable benefits. In addition, medical clowning helps build trust between physicians and patients, especially when a patient is feeling frightened or in pain, and has been shown to have positive clinical outcomes. Moisture Festival was born out of a passion for the comedy varietè arts and a desire to preserve the tight-knit community that can foster new talent and support lifelong artists. Its mission is to enrich the community by presenting an affordable annual festival showcasing the art of live comedy/varietè performance. Keeping with its mission statement, the festival strives to keep ticket prices low (as well as working with organizations like <a href="https://www.teentix.org/">Teen Tix</a> to provide heavily discounted tickets for youth audience members) as well as opening up lectures and workshops to the public at varying price points. (<a href="http://moisturefestival.blogspot.com/2017/02/the-bobs-most-influential-acapella.html">Our FREE lecture series continues in 2017 with Matthew Stull of The Bobs on Monday, March 27th at 7:30 pm</a>.) Creating an accessible performance arts festival spanning four weeks and multiple venues presents a challenge but one way that we hope to overcome barriers is by partnering with Deaf Spotlight to provide four ASL interpreted shows throughout the festival.</div>

The Bobs 35 year collaborative career is coming to an end as these tireless performers turn to new chapters in their lives. <br />
Moisture Festival Artistic Director and head of the lovingly nicknamed 'Von Tramp Family' <a href="http://moisturefestival.org/artists/view/149" target="_blank">Ron W. Bailey</a> is celebrating a milestone this year, 45 years of making music in Seattle. Making his way to Seattle from Norman, OK with his band <a href="http://pnwbands.com/dirtboys.html" target="_blank">Rose & The Dirt Boys</a> in the early 70's, Ron was a mainstay in the Seattle music scene well before becoming one of the founding minds behind Moisture Festival.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt5-290dfOBLxQawqQjJJB1y1BPueHbV71xkB-Fc8XMKS241st6Kak5iSVtCbdStKvxj__8WUAsjcHNUuQ9Cw2vMi1GDDDmkXLwnPo4-x9XhZMVfm7Q5Rib57OzhjHidBGgynYU58UdjD6/s1600/dirtboys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt5-290dfOBLxQawqQjJJB1y1BPueHbV71xkB-Fc8XMKS241st6Kak5iSVtCbdStKvxj__8WUAsjcHNUuQ9Cw2vMi1GDDDmkXLwnPo4-x9XhZMVfm7Q5Rib57OzhjHidBGgynYU58UdjD6/s320/dirtboys.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDlftdctx5Q3H4vvFJM7-P-T9QpTtUosGRZYeJ5Lj8JM6Jwy_YIYXZhe4u-Fv7LkLeEl_Wdc5a0X4YyG3-emCUTRWgfkB6HiRDDdTrJO0xdsKMm4wJ5d00XmcspTntDLSrPTLTxPQTmBiN/s1600/ron+w-+guitar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDlftdctx5Q3H4vvFJM7-P-T9QpTtUosGRZYeJ5Lj8JM6Jwy_YIYXZhe4u-Fv7LkLeEl_Wdc5a0X4YyG3-emCUTRWgfkB6HiRDDdTrJO0xdsKMm4wJ5d00XmcspTntDLSrPTLTxPQTmBiN/s320/ron+w-+guitar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Celebration is a family affair for the Baileys which is why Ron is coinciding his 70th birthday party with the release party for his daughter <a href="http://www.moisturefestival.com/artists/view/554" target="_blank">Caela's Bailey</a>'s first studio album 'Gospel of a Gutter Queen.' Caela brings her father's words and music to life in collaboration with 50 of Seattle's finest musicians and members of bands such as I<a href="http://www.industrialrevelation.com/" target="_blank">ndustrial Revelation</a>, <a href="http://flymoonroyalty.com/" target="_blank">Fly Moon Royalty</a>, <a href="http://www.dusty45s.com/" target="_blank">The Dusty 45's,</a> <a href="http://georgetownorbits.com/" target="_blank">The Gorgetown Orbits</a>, <a href="http://www.motherofpearlband.com/band.html" target="_blank">Mother of Pearl</a>, <a href="http://www.wisconseattle.com/" target="_blank">Wiscon</a>, and more.<br />
<br />
The evening of March 3rd will begin with a set from Ron W. Bailey and The Tangents. A local legend with over 40 years of writing and performing in Seattle, Ron is a founding father of the <a href="http://www.moisturefestival.com/artists/view/618" target="_blank">Royal Famille DuCaniveaux</a> and has spent 13 years at the helm as Artistic Director of Moisture Festival. In addition to his role as producer, Ron has been a driving force behind the creative direction of the festival. In addition to being our fearless leader (someone has got to jump first!) as well as being our outstanding liaison with the press, it is Ron's discerning eye that's helped to shape the media materials and marketing to suit the vision of Moisture Festival.<br />
<br />
The night will continue on with the bewitching Caela Bailey accompanied by many of the folks who played on the album and incorporating a cast of Seattle artists she has collaborated with over the years. Expect the unexpected with this family! The show takes place in Seattle's Central District at the historic <a href="http://www.washingtonhall.org/" target="_blank">Washington Hall</a>. Cabaret, vaudeville, burlesque and more combine to create a night you will not soon forget!<br />
<br />
Bar proceeds will be donated to the Moisture Festival! (helping to keep art weird in Seattle)<br />

The holidays have come and gone, hopefully leaving you stuffed with good tidings and more goodies. Here in the Moisture Festival office, the booking elves have been hard at work combing through applications and putting together a vision of the festival in store for you ahead. 2017 promises to be a year of sweets and treats for anyone looking to indulge, whether it's high flying thrill, raucous laughter, or tantalizing visuals. With the start of the New Year and the official nine week countdown until festival begun, it's time to start revealing the acts that have us buzzing with excitement.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhCvbNw9FFJjTjfghKMvmMzbWnixodOB99NwnsvI8Lnd8rXRISKqdVhshJlpIH8BukngmeISdrQgz5zXSagSCjPK_AWt_rVnN_O3ZHtlYSwM9SbTWOdrgSCcttFv-ayS1PoaS7L5XPqKEP/s1600/blanche+debris+photo+set.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="153" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhCvbNw9FFJjTjfghKMvmMzbWnixodOB99NwnsvI8Lnd8rXRISKqdVhshJlpIH8BukngmeISdrQgz5zXSagSCjPK_AWt_rVnN_O3ZHtlYSwM9SbTWOdrgSCcttFv-ayS1PoaS7L5XPqKEP/s640/blanche+debris+photo+set.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://moisturefestival.org/artists/view/267" target="_blank">Blanche DeBris</a> made her burlesque debut on the Moisture Festival stage in 2008 and will be back in 2017 to emcee a handful of Libertease Cabaret shows at the Broadway Performance Hall. Since 2012 she has been an emcee at the <a href="http://bhofweekend.com/" target="_blank">Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekender</a> as well as bringing down the house worldwide with her signature "Rubber Ducky" and "Sound of Music in Six Minutes" acts. Blanche is also an instructor, having taught classes in emceeing and character/act development at BurlyCon and all over the country.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6g_jUTSTYhuNbBZY5DMe6IEZXNowatHR20g_Jz2piZKB9Nlt9G-7w-zY9t9ZxKcSsk3l6JNhIGqJDGKkYEG6H1rsMHJ8FuQEJLaCLAqDPUrrA1OPM7oVT-Dg8mIJ9Ij1RoAMjBFjMqcAn/s1600/avner+all+photoset+january.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6g_jUTSTYhuNbBZY5DMe6IEZXNowatHR20g_Jz2piZKB9Nlt9G-7w-zY9t9ZxKcSsk3l6JNhIGqJDGKkYEG6H1rsMHJ8FuQEJLaCLAqDPUrrA1OPM7oVT-Dg8mIJ9Ij1RoAMjBFjMqcAn/s400/avner+all+photoset+january.jpg" style="cursor: move;" width="210" /></a><br />
Moisture Festival is the world's largest comedy and variete festival in the world, bringing in over 200 performers from stages across the country and around the world in addition to incubating local talent. Each year our booking team strives to create the perfect mix of returning acts and new faces, giving our audience a grab bag of music, magic, comedy, circus arts and more in every show. Five - eight shows per week, four weeks each festival, 14 years running and no two shows the same.<br />
<br />
With a growing pool of world class performers to choose from, it's a balancing act bringing together old and new, past favorites and new blood. This year we're happy to confirm both <a href="http://moisturefestival.org/artists/view/301" target="_blank">Avner the Eccentric </a>(Week 1) and <a href="http://moisturefestival.org/artists/view/223" target="_blank">Al Simmons</a> (Week 4) will both be back on stage at Hale's Palladium. Al brings his never ending storehouse of comedy props and costumes and Avner is a legend in street to stage theater; helping birth the New Vaudeville movement in the 1970's by taking his street performance across the country as a one man show.<br />
<br />
We won't just be saying hello again to festival favorites this year, we'll also be saying goodbye (for now.) After 35 years, 16 albums and eight Bobs, <a href="http://moisturefestival.org/artists/view/312" target="_blank">the Bobs</a> are in the midst of their <a href="http://www.bobs.com/" target="_blank">Farewell Tour</a> and will be joining us during Week 2 of the festival. It will be sad to say goodbye but the Moisture Festival Family is lucky to look back on so many fine performances over the years and we wish Angie, Dan, Matthew, and Gunnar all the best for the new chapters ahead of them.<br />
<div style="float: left;">
<br />
Too much history for a single blog post, if you would like to learn more about The Bobs you can <a href="http://www.bobs.com/history/" target="_blank">read about their journey starting with The Great Sand Fransisco Singing Telegram Depression of 1981 through today.</a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's a spectacularly difficult decision for our booking team to choose which new performers to bring to the festival each year. Between invitations and applications they work hard to create a line up that features local talent, national and international headliners, and deliver a one of a kind show each and every night. These are just a few examples of the world class acts that will be performing in the 14th annual Moisture Festival, many more to be announced in the weeks leading up to Opening Night. Tickets have gone on sale and are available for all show dates. Early Bird Pricing will continue for another through February 14th so consider a pair of tickets for the love bird in your life. With weekdays, weekends, matinees, and late night shows there is something for everyone and every budget.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If
some tickets remain available closer to the event, the code will be
removed, and the remaining tickets will become available on a
first-requested basis.</div>

In August 2016 a fun loving group of circus tramps representing Moisture Festival headed to Glasgow to help raise funds for the restoration of the world’s oldest surviving music hall – <a href="https://www.britanniapanopticon.org/">The Britannia Panopticon</a>, where Stan Laurel started. It was a wonderful adventure and a historic mission for Moisture Festival!</div>

The first show was Thursday evening, August 4, in the west
end of Glasgow at a stunning refurbished cathedral called <a href="http://oran-mor.co.uk/">The Oran Mor</a>, now a
famous venue for shows and events. In order to accomplish this magnificent
feat, <a href="http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/NEWs/11777785.World_s_oldest_music_hall_saved_from_demolition___thanks_to_one_woman_s_determination/">Judith Bowers</a>, who leads the Britannia Panopticon restoration effort, and her volunteers arranged two vans and two cars for transporting
people and props. The show drummer, from Glasgow, was Chris Anderson, a rock and roll
drummer who had never played a variety show before. He did a fabulous job.
Thursday was the only night that <a href="http://www.thecreativemartyrs.com/">The Creative Martyrs</a> could join us. They are
fantastic Glasgow cabaret clowns whose characters appear as though from 1853. The dressing room was down the elevator and
was reportedly Amy Winehouse’s favorite dressing room – quite beautiful and
elegant. The show went really well – greeted enthusiastically by the
audience. Once the work was done off we
went - this was our first night at <a href="http://www.scotiabar.net/">The Scotia</a> – Glasgow’s oldest pub – two
blocks from The Panopticon. </div>

Friday was spent rehearsing and everyone in the cast was
very excited to perform on the Panopticon stage! The room exudes history, the
scale is intimate - it is funky but functional with old photographs posted on
the walls, artifacts from days gone by displayed around the room. It is as
though the room embraces you. This was our first sold out show and the room was electric. I was MC that
night. I explained my connection to Scotland, a Scottish mother and a West
Virginia hillbilly father - brought together near the end of World War Two. My
family’s visits to Glasgow led to a flyer about “the world’s oldest surviving
music hall” and the obvious connection to Moisture Festival of Comedy/Variete in Seattle. I
felt at home on the stage, ready to introduce the first act.</div>

Saturday was a day full of surprises! The Saturday matinee
show was to be a clown show and workshop with <a href="http://www.moisturefestival.com/artists/view/673">Hacki Ginda</a> and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/douglas-mcpherson/bobbo-roberts---the-life-of-a-clown-part-1_b_7476668.html">Bobbo Roberts</a>, a
Glasgow 9th generation circus clown. The clowns were to make it up and handle
it. But there was no Hacki (stopped at the border). Most of the cast was taking
the day off to explore Glasgow. Around 11am Judith asked, “RB, do we have a
show? We have over 30 people who have purchased tickets! Oh, and Bobbo has another gig this morning and can’t get here
until 1pm” (he didn’t make it until 2:20pm).
I found <a href="http://www.moisturefestival.com/artists/view/293">Moeppi Ginda</a> – who had never done a clown workshop. Martha Enson (aerial rope/<a href="http://moisturefestival.org/artists/view/655">The Velones</a>) had
just arrived in Glasgow at 11am. By 2pm we had thrown together a show for the
folks! Some cast members began to</div>

walk in and were nabbed to be a part of the show. Judith put on her Florie costume. We created
a bit with the Velones and Moeppi. Then the word spread that Bobbo had arrived.
He and Moeppi took it from there, having a great time with the kids in the
audience. One exciting moment was after the show when a gentleman introduced himself as the grandson of A.E. Pickard, the man
who created The Britannia Panopticon. He was truly appreciative of the effort
we were making to help bring the music hall back to life and he loved the show!</div>

At 3:30 we had
a scheduled meeting with Mark, the rigger from <a href="https://www.aerialedge.co.uk/">Aerial Edge</a>, to confirm the
ability to rig for rope at The Panopticon and to borrow a mat for The Velones.
Mark, Cathy, Martha and myself agreed that the rigging point up in the attic
was strong enough! The Velones were on the bill for Saturday night!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As we continued
to prepare for the evening show the event manager from The Briggait (the
wonderful space where we were scheduled for our closing show on Sunday)
approached us and informed us that there were gale force winds predicted for
Sunday and since the Briggait had a roof made of glass panels that sometimes
popped out, it was deemed too dangerous to do shows there! No worries - we
loved performing in The Panopticon! I’ve rarely seen a cast more relieved and
pleased with a weather forecast. The Saturday evening show fell into place
nicely -The Velones rocked! <a href="http://armitageshanks.weebly.com/">Armitage Shanks</a>
gave that special Saturday night energy. The elephants were on parade!<o:p></o:p></div>

Closing night at The Panopticon! The cast and all of
the Panopticon volunteers were amped up for the last show. We all circled up
in the dressing room, held hands and thanked our stage manager, Caroline ,and
donors who helped make the shows a success including Judith and all the good
people at The Panopticon. It had been a wonderful experience for
all of us. Moeppi’s luggage was finally
delivered which included his own bubble formula! We were ready to deliver our
best show for the people who had come to support The Britannia Panopticon! They
rewarded us with a standing ovation and Judith closed out the evening with
Harry Lauder’s “Keep Right on to the End of the Road.” No one wanted it to be over but the
adventure was near the end - a wonderful success! As Jenny Collins said, “like
a wonderful dream that came true.”</div>

Experience the best British Panto this side of the Pond. Panto has a long tradition of some three hundred years. Performed during the holidays, this interactive theatre is fun for all, parents and kids alike. This year's Panto is once again full of large, colorful characters, original songs, plenty of audience participation, and fairy tale fun to entertain audiences both young and old! You'll be encouraged to boo at the villains, cheer for the heroes, and sing along with whole cast. The troupe manages to fire enough jokes and innuendos over the kids' heads to keep everyone entertained. With all original songs and music featuring The Fremont Philharmonic Orchestra, this musical comedy is a great holiday experience.</div>

Notes from a conversation with the Festival’s Ron W. Bailey </h2>
<i>By Steve Wacker </i><br />
<br />
<h3>
</h3>
The story of how Moisture Festival came into existence is drawn from many threads. It’s summarized quite nicely on the Moisture Festival website, but what about the motivations of the principals? How did they hit on the notion of varietè? A few months ago we heard from Festival cofounder Tim Furst, who brought a great deal of experience to the table from his years with the Flying Karamazov Brothers. A recent conversation with Festival Artistic Director and cofounder Ron W. Bailey shed a bit more light on how it all came together.<br />

<span id="goog_333480914"></span><span id="goog_333480915"></span>It’s fairly well known that Bailey and Maque DaVis (long-time Fremont performance art finagler and one of the instigators of the Fremont Solstice Parade) were inspired by the Oregon Country Fair (OCF). But when Bailey first attended OCF, his primary performance experience was as a street musician in Seattle, playing in places like the Pike Place Market with the Dynamic Logs, a band of some renown in the late 1970s. So how did a Seattle street musician get turned on to varietè?<br />
<br />
“The first time I went down there (to OCF) I was with a friend, and it’s a great little gathering – they do a lot of vaudeville circus stuff,” said Bailey. “It’s in the woods, and they have music and vaudeville, but it really comes to life at night, after the public has gone home in the early evening. The people who work there hang out in the woods at night, performing and playing music, and it’s a rare and beautiful scene.”<br />
<br />
Inspired by acts like the Flying Karamazov Brothers, Bailey and some friends with circus skills started combining street music with circus performance. This concept evolved over time, and came to include members of Bailey’s family. They called themselves gutter performers because of their origins as street musicians. However, because they also had a sense of style and knew that everything sounds better in French, they became known as the Royal Famille Du Caniveaux. (Yes, caniveaux is French for gutters.)<br />
<br />
Bailey has been attending OCF and performing there since the early 1980s, and over the years he has met a lot of people in the varietè arts. One person he met early on was Tom Noddy (known to Festival fans as the Bubble Guy), and a friendship developed. Through Noddy he met the gifted and hilarious German clown Hacki Ginda, who had started a varietè/comedy festival in Berlin. By the early 1990s, the Royal Famille Du Caniveaux had been to Europe a couple of times and performed at street fairs in Barcelona and Amsterdam. It was around that time that Noddy and Bailey got the opportunity to fly to Berlin and experience the festival that Hacki Ginda helped establish.<br />
<br />
“There was a varietè theater called the Chameleon, and a small circus tent as well as a medium-sized one, right in the heart of Berlin,” Bailey recalled. “Empty storefronts and basement rooms also became performance venues. There were jugglers from Africa, varietè acts from around Europe, and it was just a ball – some of the funniest stuff I’ve ever seen – great shows. People would mingle in the bars and cafés after the performances, and Tom and I were thinking, ‘Man – is there a way to make a festival like this happen in Seattle?’”<br />
<br />
Back at OCF, Bailey and DaVis used to run into each other and say “I wish we could think of some way to bring the energy from OCF up to Seattle.” But OCF was out in the woods, and such a different scene – they weren’t able to figure out how to do it. “When I came back from the festival that Hacki put on, I said to Maque ‘I think I know how we can do it. We’re going to have a comedy/varietè festival.’ And he was like ‘Okay – let’s try it.’”<br />

<br />
OCF is almost like a carnival midway or a small village, with vendors and crafts in addition to performance venues. “What Hacki did in Berlin was show me what a really good varietè show was like, with really good acts,” Bailey said. “He sets the tone, and he has this way of disarming everybody and making them feel comfortable, but he was presenting it. We wanted to combine quality of performance with the funkiness of OCF – we didn’t want to get it too tight or refined.”<br />
<br />
Bailey noted how the looseness of the OCF performers enhanced their connection with audiences – almost like a signal, a willingness to have some fun. “If anything, it’s like what you get from playing on the street. The people are like ten feet away from you, you’re looking them in the eye, you’re seeing them smile, you’re seeing them laugh, you see them get the jokes or appreciate the music, or start dancing, and there’s a certain power in that. When you go from the street into the theater, you don’t want to lose that.”<br />
<br />
“It was the performing on the street that made me think ‘This is the kind of energy that I like to get from the audience.’ That’s why I loved the kind of stuff that was going on at OCF. When we decided to do the Festival, everybody understood that kind of chemistry. We wanted it to be like that, as if we were performing on the street. We wanted the energy of OCF, but we wanted to present the varietè acts in a good way, with good lighting and sound.”<br />
<br />
It’s hard to describe what people sitting in a room laughing together does for making them feel like they know each other. But that’s what happens each spring at Hale’s Palladium when the Festival rolls around. “The vibe in the Palladium is a phenomenon,” Bailey says fondly. “Part of its charm is that it’s just a brewery warehouse with wooden ceilings and walls, and so when there’s applause in there it brings the house down. And when people are laughing it just echoes off the walls.”<br />
<br />
So there you have it – a bit more background on how the Moisture Festival came to be the rollicking and awe-inspiring event that it is. Homegrown in the Pacific Northwest for your enjoyment – may your next Festival experience be an enriching one.<br />

<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIRNciEmVmRiaZAJ846hgWzL32UDhqoqTFulOlF-ISbcpbYzuWUh-AQn0d3f7DfF0gIAoDnPFGjHoqc5WiqlkqtOHlIqJ0E70dHi7nhWBdN1h-7aB0gzX_PirkrjqwDMqmY-_vncSMUoM/s1600/entrance.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIRNciEmVmRiaZAJ846hgWzL32UDhqoqTFulOlF-ISbcpbYzuWUh-AQn0d3f7DfF0gIAoDnPFGjHoqc5WiqlkqtOHlIqJ0E70dHi7nhWBdN1h-7aB0gzX_PirkrjqwDMqmY-_vncSMUoM/s320/entrance.png" width="216" /></a>Today’s Moisture Festival fans probably don’t give much thought to the performance space known as Hale’s Palladium or how the Festival grew into it. It’s not too involved a story, actually, but it shines a light on how a community-minded business organization was able to find a way to support the community.<br />
<br />
The Festival is successful in part because it focuses on fun – it believes in shared laughter as an important aspect of community, and it also supports independent artists. We all love to laugh, but multiplying the mirth is one of the Festival‘s core challenges as it continues to expand its audience. Although it’s now spread across multiple venues, the Festival’s beginnings were much more humble.<br />
<br />
One of these days we’ll reach into the wayback machine and find out more about what inspired the Festival’s founders, but one thing is clear: performers need a space in which they can perform. They need a setting in which to establish a scene – they need a venue.<br />
<br />
When the first Moisture Festival was held in 2004, the venue was a tent in the heart of Fremont, near where the Redhook Brewery was located at the time. Phil O’Brien of Hale’s Ales recently related a story that Moisture Festival co-founder Ron W. Bailey is also fond of telling.<br />
<br />
Being the savvy and entrepreneurial impresario that he is, Ron knows that appropriate liquid refreshment can help lubricate the machinery of mirth. During the flurry of activities surrounding the inaugural season of the Festival, someone mentioned that Mike Hale was a generous guy and had something of a reputation for supporting community spirit. So a request was made – could you spare any beer?<br />
<br />
By this time (2004) Hale’s was well established in Seattle. Mike Hale founded the company in 1983 in Colville WA, in the far northeastern part of the state, and he consolidated all operations in the current Fremont location in 1996. (Hale’s is still independently owned, by the way, and is run by a close-knit group of people who are proud to continue the tradition that Mike established.) And for many years, one of the ways that Hale kept in touch with his brewery’s customers was by making deliveries himself.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqsi0IhMqZLYtMJfqySd76D9tIp3p2qyR2jI5aiA8SEcNdHmJWf3CfjSnluLZAeL7XRJU0X8sShX70jq4AROHgpHkWO1hfaXQNrCZ_4Dh-yaMS_ZD_YN6k38LsXc2l5BXBiOk2JsA0P20/s1600/2004tix-first+tix.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqsi0IhMqZLYtMJfqySd76D9tIp3p2qyR2jI5aiA8SEcNdHmJWf3CfjSnluLZAeL7XRJU0X8sShX70jq4AROHgpHkWO1hfaXQNrCZ_4Dh-yaMS_ZD_YN6k38LsXc2l5BXBiOk2JsA0P20/s320/2004tix-first+tix.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First Moisture Festival Tickets - 2004</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So amidst the hubbub of the first Moisture Festival, someone came in with a keg of beer and asked where he should put it. After that detail was worked out, Ron W. Bailey said to the deliveryman “Say thanks to Mike Hale for us – we really appreciate it.” The deliveryman responded with “I’m Mike Hale! You’re welcome!” And a relationship was born that continues to this day.<br />
<br />
Mike Hale was able to perceive how the Moisture Festival could enhance the community. Whether he had a vision as grand as that of Ron and Tim Furst we don’t really know – but the connection was made, and his company ended up being a major supporter of the Festival.<br />
<br />
Hale’s Ales primarily used the space behind its brewing operations as a warehouse, but had established a tradition of using it each year to hold a Christmas party for their customers. When the Moisture Festival became aware of the space, they asked if they could use it to stage a benefit. One thing led to another, and it has since evolved into Hale’s Palladium, a community performance space that’s available for rental.<br />
<br />
One of the Palladium’s regular tenants is the Fremont Players, a non-profit community theatre group dedicated to producing authentic British Panto every holiday season. And of course the other regular tenant is the Moisture Festival, along with its mission of spreading merriment and laughter throughout Seattle.<br />
<br />
So now you know how Hale’s Ales, the longest running independently owned brewery in the Pacific Northwest, came to support the Moisture Festival. Thanks to Mike and everyone at Hale’s Ales!<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
Part of the answer lies in the egalitarian philosophy the
Festival maintains with regard to how performers are compensated. In a recent
conversation, Moisture Festival co-founder Tim Furst said that the Moisture
Festival’s share system is one of the things that sets the Festival apart and
makes it possible. “We decided to deal with all performers equally as
individuals, and to give every performer one share for each show in which they
perform,” says Furst.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It works like this: All income goes into the same pot. At
the end of the Festival, after all hard expenses are paid (such as
transportation, insurance, theater rental, and food) and enough money is put
aside to cover the year-round operating costs, the remainder is divided among
all performers and some of the key technical people. In this way, the value of
a share is set AFTER the Festival, after expenses are paid, which keeps the Festival
out of debt. Performers are told they will receive a stipend that is based
on how well the Festival does. Because all the money from all shows is pooled,
it means that the performers are compensated equally, and not based on the
ticket sales for a given night’s show. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Furst also pointed out the share system means that Festival
organizers don’t have to negotiate separate fees for every act, which would be
a lot of work. For example, the 2016 season featured more than 125 different
acts. Eliminating the need for fee negotiation saves the volunteer staff a lot
of time and effort. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
Another unique aspect of how the Moisture Festival conducts
business is the way it relates to performers. “We tell performers that if
they’re booked at the Festival and they get an opportunity for a well-paying
gig that they feel it’s in their best interests to take, it’s fine to cancel.
We won’t hold them to their commitment if they need to take another gig.”<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjin5GZIvc-kBee1q-0i67YBZLeO8oaUS3-bVo0t3Nqm-P0LxqAU-yB3X4hJXtrSdtGA7IilZiCtakzPtewTW6-caB0CjSzDYhm_DpUasG-axSP-0ozQ2JSU41kofTMX5VusTJZPaeBp8U/s1600/greenroom001+crop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjin5GZIvc-kBee1q-0i67YBZLeO8oaUS3-bVo0t3Nqm-P0LxqAU-yB3X4hJXtrSdtGA7IilZiCtakzPtewTW6-caB0CjSzDYhm_DpUasG-axSP-0ozQ2JSU41kofTMX5VusTJZPaeBp8U/s320/greenroom001+crop.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">photo by Sandy Lam Photography</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Furst was a full-time professional performer for more than
20 years (with the Flying Karamazov Brothers), and he knows what it’s like to deal
with contracts, exclusivity agreements, and the like. “We don’t promote the Festival
based on individual performers, and we let performers know they can perform in
Seattle before, during, and after the Festival. We promote the Festival as a
whole, and we arrange performers’ schedules around other things they might want
to do in Seattle, such as catch another show, dine with relatives, or whatever.
We want them to enjoy their time in Seattle.” </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In addition, the Moisture Festival philosophy is to treat all
performers equally. “We have a full range of performers, from people just starting
out to seasoned professionals who typically earn thousands of dollars for their
performances elsewhere,” says Furst. “We’ve had Cirque de Soleil performers get
in touch and say that they have a week off, and that they’d like to come out. Also,
each performer gets a full share. It’s not one share per act, but one share per
performer. In traditional vaudeville, different size acts would get paid
different amounts, and a performer’s experience might also affect their pay.
With Moisture Festival, it’s truly a one-size-fits-all model. You perform, you
get a share. You do lights, you get a share. It’s served us well.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The idea for the share system emerged in about 1976, says
Furst. “A number of performers would come to the Oregon Country Fair (OCF),
some of whom would receive a stipend, but basically performers were paid in
accordance with their ability to pass the hat at their own shows. Then a number
of us who performed on the one vaudeville stage decided to put on a big
combined show, which meant we would all be passing the hat for the same show. We
had lengthy discussions about how the “hat” should be divided, and we decided
that we should just split it equally among everyone who was in the show.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Furst also noted that for a number of years, the OCF served
as a gathering place for many new vaudeville performers, especially those on
the West Coast. However, the OCF didn’t pay travel expenses and only provided
small stipends. “There were some performers who couldn’t afford to spend a week
in the woods with their friends and lose money, because it would cost too much
to fly out and give up other work, so over the years the OCF became less of a
gathering place for vaudeville performers. A number of us missed that
camaraderie and wanted to create a gathering place for performers.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6yUchUHgHCmTxZNAqPLV_i21pu60G-KueQnea4ncdjaYY28LySomU_qsCedTtiRZT0Nqh5WXnCW9j0w5TH2EfL3vdeL7_GHXJA2tLQatLvkpjKNAdZlFVNntY7_z61v5SCMjtWEj1-OY/s1600/IMG_2357261.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6yUchUHgHCmTxZNAqPLV_i21pu60G-KueQnea4ncdjaYY28LySomU_qsCedTtiRZT0Nqh5WXnCW9j0w5TH2EfL3vdeL7_GHXJA2tLQatLvkpjKNAdZlFVNntY7_z61v5SCMjtWEj1-OY/s320/IMG_2357261.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">photo by Sandy Lam Photography</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This desire to create a gathering place was part of the
inspiration for the Moisture Festival. Also, Furst had made many friends during
his 20+ years of touring. “I wanted to provide a place for us all to get
together and enjoy each other. For example, there are many vaudeville
performers in New England, very few of whom had any contact with the West Coast.
So we thought maybe we could connect similar performers and provide a place for
them to hang out.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Performers appreciate the Moisture Festival philosophy.
“They don’t make very much money, but we pay their transportation expenses, and
we house and feed them,” says Furst. “Feeding performers is not unique, but
it’s not that common either. We provide a full dinner every night for all
performers and tech people.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As a touring performer, Furst learned that when he was
treated decently – when basic needs were met – it was much more enjoyable. And
if the performers are enjoying themselves, the quality of the performance is
enhanced – the audience can feel it. “So I pushed hard in the early years. If Moisture
Festival was going to work, and we were going to get performers to come in and
perform without any guarantee, we needed to house them, feed them, and treat
them well.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Moisture Festival audiences can attest to the success of
that philosophy. If the performers seem to really be enjoying themselves,
that’s because they probably are. The Moisture Festival is unique, and we hope
its success will continue for many years to come. "When I stopped touring
after 20+ years, I missed spending time with performer friends from around the
world. I thought I’d start a festival so I could get my friends to come to me,”
says Furst. And we’re glad he did.</div>

<br />
Imagine, if you will, what life was like for the population of Glasgow, Scotland in the mid-19th century. Living conditions were awful, at least by contemporary American standards, but two basic needs were provided for: entertainment and communal laughter. The Britannia Music Hall (as it was then known) provided four variety shows a day, primarily featuring dancing women and ballad crooners. Some 1500 attendees would pack themselves into the hall to be entertained and find a bit of escape.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRajVf9Snsh4hf2Y2T4riwjU_jUfBL9oGj9k1gw2qUtZMtWLYtytkHqbYYg0gvE62qfqkjzkbEwUN57COqmAGFo-xNiwXTY3PhEwT_om1PGO5j-tsaX2eflLpkaNazIo5qxyMPNjY7uHE/s1600/panopticon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRajVf9Snsh4hf2Y2T4riwjU_jUfBL9oGj9k1gw2qUtZMtWLYtytkHqbYYg0gvE62qfqkjzkbEwUN57COqmAGFo-xNiwXTY3PhEwT_om1PGO5j-tsaX2eflLpkaNazIo5qxyMPNjY7uHE/s320/panopticon.jpg" width="253" /></a>According to Moisture Festival co-founder and current Artistic Director Ron W. Bailey, music halls flourished during the Industrial Revolution when populations in cities like Glasgow practically tripled overnight. Over time, the Britannia's bill was expanded to include novelty acts, child performers, acrobats, comedians, high-wire artists, and trapeze artists. Stan Laurel worked there as a janitor while his father performed on stage. Stan was encouraged to try his hand at performing, he made his first public appearance after the hall was rechristened the Grand Panopticon in 1906 and the rest is history. He eventually went to Hollywood with his friend Charlie Chaplin. There, Stan partnered with Oliver Hardy to become Laurel and Hardy, the well-loved comedians of silent film<br />
<br />
Bailey recently returned from a tour of Scotland and Ireland. "My mother, Sadie Bailey, was born just outside of Glasgow and I always treasured visits there." While in Glasgow, he saw a poster for a fundraiser for the hall's current incarnation - now known as the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall. "I was immediately intrigued, because I knew that the entertainment style in music halls led to American vaudeville and eventually to The Moisture Festival," said Bailey.<br />
<br />
During his tour Bailey met many other vaudevillians, and he also spent some time researching the history of music halls and those theaters that inspired this art form. Many Moisture Festival artists share in the fascination of the history of the art form, and it wasn't very long before a plan was hatched to help the Britannia Panopticon in its restoration efforts. And you, dear Moisture Festival supporter, can help by making a GoFundMe donation at <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/glasgowmusichall">www.gofundme.com/glasgowmusichall</a>.<br />
